"I've known Lee Weitzman since I started in this
business in 1989. One reason we continue to
use Lee Weitzman Furniture is that he’s always
open to creating something outside of his own
designs that incorporates other influences. He's
a terrific collaborator."

Lee Weitzman's early inspiration began with an intense interest in wood, how to
understand and work with it and other materials to create objects. "To me designing
furniture is blending the knowledge of craft and the restraints of function, with the
intuitive sense an artist uses making art. I combine materials with shapes to create
individual pieces of furniture that people will notice and contemplate … and take
pleasure in using."
With a background in sculpture and furniture making, Lee draws from his craftsman
roots when he designs. Over time he has developed his own aesthetic senses
of form, function, and material combinations, on which he relies to generate new
designs and refine them further. Lee works closely on a daily basis with his furniture
makers, problem-solving and engineering the pieces as they take shape in the
workrooms. This closeness to the making of the furniture enables him to maintain
quality control of the designs he puts to paper, ensuring that his vision is realized to
its full potential. In addition to overseeing design and production of the furniture, Lee
focuses his attention on sales and marketing of his collection.
Teaching
Lee also imparts his knowledge to a new generation, teaching woodworking and
furniture design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. |
